Location

Kunststation Kleinsassen

More Information

As part of the Main-Kinzig Fulda 2024 cultural summer, the Kleinsassen art station is presenting masterpieces made of paper in its exhibition halls: cut, folded and moulded.

What this material can withstand and achieve in terms of design never ceases to amaze. For a long time - until the end of the 19th century - paper served mainly as a carrier of information and was used for drawing, watercolouring and printing. Silhouettes and folding techniques had a long tradition in China and Japan and became increasingly popular in Europe. It was only later, and especially since the 1960s, that artists discovered paper as an independent artistic medium for their work.

Paper is a very pliable material that can be reached almost anywhere: flexible, light and sometimes surprisingly stable, voluminous through crumpling, creasing, folding and "moulding". There are many variations in thickness and surface texture, depending on the fibres used and the manufacturing process. Paper can be embossed and even sculpted. Works of art with incredibly narrow webs are created - torn or cut, with realistic depictions or in a reduced, conceptual design language. Artful folding and creasing create reliefs, and life-size figures can be formed from delicate Japanese papers. Some artists use new paper, others "recycle" used or printed paper. A particular attraction for some artists is that they produce their own paper and can experiment in detail, from preparing the fibre pulp to drawing and designing. Paper can be made transparent, relief-like or even fully sculptural, coloured with individual pigments and penetrated in a painterly way in pulp painting.

Stæremosen 8

More Information

In the summer of 2024, The Paper Academy, Denmark, welcomes you to the exhibition Eternal Paper, where 20 international artists, mainly from the USA, present  artworks made with paper. The exhibition is curated by Helen Frerick, American artist, curator and founder of the art institution Pyramid Atlantic, Maryland, USA.

Eternal Paper was exhibited at the University of Maryland Global Campus, USA, from October 2023 to May 2024 and can now be experienced in the Paper Academy’s gallery in Gilleleje in a slightly different form.

Artists who have worked for many years with handmade paper, nature's fibers and water, to express themselves through art, have harboured experience and expertise within themselves and understand that they, as temporary containers of this knowledge, have a responsibility to provide this on to future generations. Implicit in their work is something larger: a historical organism of research, travel, collaboration and exchange that preserves paper forever.

A catalogue has been published in connection with the exhibition.

Karen Olson Karen Olson

Opening Hours

Closed Monday, Wednesday, Sunday

Location

Maine Museum of Photographic Arts
15 Middle St.
Portland, Maine 04101

More Information

Karen Olson presents a selection of her series "Language of the Heart" at the group show "In the Making" at the Maine Museum of Photographic Arts in Portland, Maine.

In the Making is a provocative exhibition that illustrates where the photographic medium is today. There are sculptures, camera-less works, multimedia constructions, collaborative pieces and an installation. Our hope is that viewers will delight in the craftsmanship, the use of line/drawing throughout, and the variety of alternative processes. The themes will be familiar: family, conservation, art for art’s sake and the intuitive exploration of photography. To say this is an exciting exhibit would be to understate our enthusiasm about it. Come and bring people with you who want to delve into and learn more about contemporary artists and works.

Artist

Marie Sol Payro Marie Sol Payro

Opening Hours

Tuesday to Sunday 10 am - 6 pm
Closed Monday

Location

Centro Cultural de Coatepec
Jimenez del Campillo 4
Coatepec, Veracruz

More Information

Marie Sol Payro has worked many years in the processes of handmade paper, tracing of its living history with the people of Mexico who preserve their legacy in the mountains of the northern Sierra of Puebla. Handmade paper, plant fibers, natural dyes, earth or forest elements are the protagonists of the pieces.

Collaborating in workshops and putting hands into the fiber, both to make leaves and to create pieces and experimenting with local fibers, Marie has been discovering its symbology, its direct relationship with the cultures and mountains that have sheltered it and provided its fibers.

From ritual and clothing in the pre-Columbian era, the support of images and texts, as well as its textile dimension where, Marie has begun to explore paper as a textile here in. The low tide appears in dialogue with some threads of wool, allowing us to enter where the waters in complicity with the moon allow us to see traces, stitches, vestiges, marks of a certain space-time.

Porteuses d'eauX

Event Dates

Opening Hours

Daily 10 am - 6 pm

Location

Calvignac,  Lot

More Information

Seven sculptures in recycled paper pulp, inspired by the water containers that village women once wore on their heads to supply their households on a daily basis.

They will be installed In Situ on the "Chemin de l'Eau" in Calvignac, Lot, southern France. The path they followed was carved into the rock on which the village is perched, 600m above the river.

In this wild, majestic, abrupt and vertiginous panorama, these sculptures seem like silhouettes in motion, deforming as they climb, crumbling under the weight, the task and the years.

They become carriers of waterX (plural) when the uterus becomes another container for another kind of water. Motherhood prepares, but doesn't stop the procession.

Cycle and movement. Present and infinite time.

They are made up of strata of our modern, geological-looking waste. Sedimentation: accumulation of the remains of the earth.

Exclusively recycled paper, mineral and vegetable elements.

No petrochemicals.

Compostable works.

More Information

Virginia Lorenzetti is an italian artist who currently lives and works in Dresden (Germany). She completed in 2023 her master in Graphic Arts at the Belle Arti di Roma (Italy); since then she has been a post-graduate master student of Prof. Anne Neukamp at the Dresden University of Fine Arts (HfBK Dresden).

For her first solo exhibition in Germany "Ephemeral Matters", curated by Liam Floyd, Virginia Lorenzetti exhibits a series of new works made with natural fibers (oriental papers and raw natural fabrics) and natural plant-based colours.

"In painting, things, people or situations are often ‘immortalised on canvas’, but do they really last forever? Aren’t most works exposed to decay and eventually forgotten? Virginia Lorenzetti certainly doesn’t believe in eternity and dedicates her art to the opposite: ephemerality. Ephemeral Matters, the title of her solo exhibition, can be read in different ways: as ‘fleeting material’, ‘fleeting issue’ or also as ‘the fleeting is important’. All of which are welcome interpretations. Lorenzetti explores questions of evolution, transformation and renewal of the visual language both technically and conceptually. A perpetual venture to immortalise the ephemeral. Her works mostly consist of delicate compositions of dyed papers and fabrics. Using self-made natural pigments and focusing mainly on oxidative processes, she dyes folded papers with different textures and grammages. The folding and colouring create two-dimensional patterns with smooth colour gradients. Images that seem as though they have captured only the shadow of a moment." (Liam Floyd)

Or: by Appointment

Location

The  Gallery at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church

More Information

"John Wittenberg has his North Fork studio in a secluded rural section of Southold, still amidst farm fields and not far from rocky cliffs overlooking the sandy beach of Long Island Sound. This natural environment both inspires his art and provides, in part, its raw materials. Handmade paper establishes a unifying ground, as found elements, from minerals and rocks to feathers and leaves, conjoin thereon, or within, creating an evocative cross between relief sculpture and collage."

The artist states: “My eye is drawn to the physical world, how light and shadow play on surfaces, the way nature cycles between growth, decay, and renewal. I observe the beauty of imperfections, how objects change in varying light, the nexus where different surfaces meet.”

Galerie "A l'Ecu de France"
1, rue Robert Cahen
78220 Viroflay

More Information

"Paper is the material that I like to use, whether it is made in the High Plateaux of Nepal, or worn, abandoned and found at Emmaüs. It is then the pleasure of discovering old rolls of wallpaper which, by cutting or tearing, become the supports for my sculptures and delicate creations confined in frames. It is the collection of old books, pages of abandoned stories that I cut out and roll up like cocoons of words keeping their mystery, suspended by wires in metal structures, the beginnings of a metamorphosis allowing me to approach the realization of object books.
My work explores the symbolism of the circle, in search of movement, change, the momentum of a new balance, the evolving nature of life." – Catherine Simoneau Pestel

Opening reception, Friday, May 3, 6-8pm

Location

David Shelton Gallery
4411 Montrose Blvd. Suite B
Houston, TX 77006

More Information

Michael Velliquette is an artist renowned for his intricately crafted works in the medium of paper. His works are exquisitely crafted by cutting, rolling, folding, and layering paper into complex dimensional tableaux. Their dazzling degree of texture and detail display a mastery of skill he has developed over the past two decades working with the medium. His newest monochromatic sculptural constructions are built up in shallow relief with gold metallic paper imbuing them with a glimmering sheen and which make them appear from certain aspects self-illuminating. In this new series, Velliquette also revisits a lexicon of imagery used in his earlier work, including eye and hand motifs, to represent sensory experiences such as sight and touch, as well as more contemplative phenomena such as seeing and feeling. These will be presented with his first series of free-standing metal sculptures constructed in corresponding shapes and motifs.

Edge (polish name: Krawędź)

Poland

Event Dates

The exhibition is opened from January 12, 2024 until June 13, 2024.

Artist

Maria Matyja-Rozpara Maria Matyja-Rozpara

Opening Hours

Monday to Saturday 9 am - 6 pm
Sunday 9 am - 4 pm

Location

Museum of Papermaking
Kłodzka 42
57-340 Duszniki-Zdrój

More Information

Maria Matyi-Rozpara's new exhibition is titled "Edge" (polish name: „Krawędź”). Etymology derives its meaning from the polish word "krawać" meaning to cut, but this also means to give shape and search for form. At the same time, the word means the edge, the end of something and the necessary contact with something else.  Thus, it is an exceptionally capacious name for the exhibition, suggestive but not imposing, assuming respect for the viewer and inviting them to work individually on reading the presented objects.

Meanwhile, paper is very often both a carrier and material testimony of ideas - sometimes the most important ones, determining the order of the world. As a substance of organic origin, it contains its structure written in every smallest particle.

In the case of this exhibition, paper is both a visual material and an ideological message although it is not given explicitly, as a record.

The exhibition largely has a character that refers to the world of Christian symbolism. It is a testimony to its experience, but also a dialogue with its traditional forms and an attempt to translate it into a new, inclusive language.

Watching yet another exhibition of works by Maria Matyi-Rozpara, one can ponder what some call the power of images - how are they present in our lives, how do they affect us? To what extent are they necessary for an idea? Or its attempt to understand or experience? Would we stop to think about these issues if not for artists? Exhibitions like this one allow us to stop, to breathe, to give ourselves space for reflection.

Fragment of text from the catalogue written by Ewelina Sobczyk-Podleszańska.

Opening Hours

Wednesday to Sunday 3 pm - 7 pm
Closed on legal holidays

Location

Salles Raymond Moretti
La Maison du Boulanger
16 rue Champeaux
10000 Troyes

More Information

Elizabeth Lefranc weaves the things of life. Beyond the aesthetic proposal, she works on the perception of intimacy and time. Between care and expression, she warps reconstruction, weaves repair. In between the art of thread and the art of paper, she reweaves, re-pairs, re-pairs, rearranges...
Each fragment of her weaving is the witness of a journey, the vestige of a memory. As she recycles and researches textures, shadows and colours, she recreates poetry, intertwining and communication.
On the border of Art Brut, she seeks an alchemy between the recycled materials she chooses. She elaborates another framework, knits the material as much as she wants.
When dialogue is established with the explorer of her work, it is to better lead them towards the recesses of the unconscious where one does not usually go.

The exhibition is opened from May 02, 2024 until June 06, 2024.

Opening Hours

Tuesday to Sunday 2 pm - 8 pm

Location

Marcelo Denny Theater
Rua Elisa Costa Santos 154,
São José dos Campos, São Paulo

More Information

This theater is a cultural space that carries out multiple activities. There are 4 paintings made during the pandemic seclusion period. There were 17 panels with collages that had been in my studio since 2006.

Collages of billboard sheets that I got on Rua Fidalga, São Paulo, Brasil in front of the old Gráfica Fidalga where we printed Lamabe Lambes for a project we carried out at SESC São José dos Campos called CAÇAMBA. The roll of printed paper taken from the billboard contained countless layers of colorful reticulated paper overlapping advertisements.

My pictorial research included artists such as Mimo Rotella, Kurt Schwitters, Josef Albers and the New Realists. Based on this material collected on the street, I started new processes, also collecting other discarded graphic materials such as toll receipts that had photos of missing people. These panels were exhibited once and remained stored in my studio.

In 2021, after a big cleaning to remove everything from the map drawers, cupboards and boxes, I revisited several works and delved into a pictorial research of layers, washes and masses of paint. I recognized in the billboards a new possibility of work that required a physical impact, due to the dimensions, number of panels and emotional impact, due to social isolation and the erasure of previous work.

More Information

Pulp & Bind brings together 18 artists working across the diffuse region of Southern Appalachia who are deeply engaged with the mediums of paper and book as a form and a concept. The structural potential of paper, its emotive qualities and familiar insinuations, and the alternately highly-refined and visibly handmade possibilities of the material are just some of the recurrent themes across this exhibition. Bringing together this diverse group of objects, bound by a seemingly humble, familiar medium, reflects our region’s heterogeneity and challenges assumptions about Craft and Appalachian creative production at large.

More Information

Hand paper making allows me to transform fibres into new materials, to make paper that can bring an ecosystem of very real issues into tangible form. Printed paper pulps, bushfire charcoal and ochres are added on the wet sheet which are haunted by watermarks. The paper becomes both the substrate and content.

The works become an interplay between the method and the message about the nature of the human impact on the world around us.
As a papermaker I am immersed in the materiality of my media in a deeply physical and analytical way, combining science and art, chemistry and ecology; the alchemical nature of papermaking where natural matter is transmuted into a malleable material that can be moulded into artistic form. My paper is not a neutral support.

More Information

Paper can evoke feelings of love, sadness, excitement, and longing. It can transport you to a memory, a time, or a place. Even as technology advances and more things become paperless, there is a tactility, permanence, and transformation that can happen with actual paper.

Whether it is sculptured, cut, altered, molded, mixed, dyed, and more, seventeen contemporary artists are exploring paper in new ways.

Within each artwork themes of grief, contemporary culture, reflection of daily moments, growth, pattern symbolism, and more are explored, but what unifies them all is simply the source: paper!

This exhibit invites visitors to explore the joy and wonder of paper.

De Filet de Paper presents the work of eight Canadian artists who, drawing on their know-how and contemporary craft practices, shape and transform paper. The exhibition explores the language of paper, highlighting the strength of the artisanal gesture behind each work and the creative power of manual know-how. The forms and compositions of the expressive works, often abstract, bear witness to a deep passion for the meticulous gestures required by thread techniques and transforming paper.

"The body of work presented reflects a combination of high-precision gestures, the transformation of paper material into new material and the use of thread to create works of great finesse. By embroidering, weaving, braiding and knotting paper, the artists assume their unique style and perpetuate a meticulous craft gesture, making this material a particular mode of artistic expression that leaves room for flexible sculptures and organic abstractions and other evocations."

Curated individual and group presentations will display a diverse range of works on and with paper in the atrium of the Deutsche Telekom Hauptstadtrepräsentanz, centrally located at Gendarmenmarkt in Berlin-Mitte.
The medium of paper encourages experimentation and the realization of ideas while minimizing the risk of huge material costs. It creates a barrier-free approach, not only for artists, but also for those who want to buy their first or tenth work of art. For these reasons, paper is at the heart of our art fair concept, becoming the playground of artistic expressions across all positions.
