State of Play offers artistic mentoring designed so that each participant can develop their own sustainable practice all while creating a personal project throughout the year.
It interweaves three intersecting and interconnected lines of work:
Cultivating curiosity and visual appetite «eye-petite” training the gaze and visual literacy. Working with constellation research processes, from intuition to organisation.
Engaging in manual and artisanal practices enables us to 'think with our hands,' thereby opening pathways to forms of intuitive knowledge.By entering a 'creative trance,' one can generate rapid, nonjudgmental images through experimental techniques that embrace error and invite surprise.
Granting space and permission to experiment, the sketchbook becomes both a vessel for an artistic practice and a sanctuary for the creative journey.
Application form and course prospectus are available as downloads on the IAPMA website below and below.

The workshop takes place from November 16, 2025 until November 19, 2025.
Jane Ponsford will lead an exploration of colour in papermaking using natural inks/ dyes and pigments, including subtle colours from the beautiful autumn/ winter gardens at West Dean in Sussex, England.
Explore colour in papermaking using natural dyes and pigments, including some from the gardens at West Dean. Use traditional and accessible papermaking techniques with cotton pulp, then dye and stain your papers to make simple books or handmade paper.
The course will be taught by means of demonstrations and practical work, as well as individual attention to support your project. There will be information and handouts to allow you to take these skills further independently after the course. Participants will make paper traditionally using a Hollander beater and professional equipment, making and using cotton pulp to form sheets, but you will also explore more easily accessible techniques before experimenting with dyeing and dip-dyeing and making natural inks to mark and stain our paper.
At the end of the course, you will have made some beautiful sheets of paper, carefully considered artist books responding to natural colour and other two and three-dimensional handmade paper artworks. You will have experimented with papermaking and making and using natural dyes using a range of techniques and you will have gained and built upon skills to take further in your own work.
This course is particularly suitable for those with an interest in papermaking and fibre crafts in relation to landscape.
Suitable for all.

The workshop takes place from February 08, 2026 until February 08, 2026.
A creative papermaking workshop inspired by the experimental and gestural marks J.M.W. Turner employed in his plein-air sketches and seascapes.
Join artist-papermaker Jane Ponsford to learn traditional papermaking techniques and create your own handmade linen and cotton rag paper. Experiment with delicate tints and dramatic sweeps of colour, using a colour pallette inspired by Impressions in Watercolour: J. M. W. Turner and his Contemporaries.
Participants can keep these sample sheets as they are or bind them together using a simple bookbinding technique to make their own book of skies.
During the course of the day, participants will discuss the types of paper that Turner and his contemporaries used and the watercolour pigments that were available at the time. This will be used as a background for our own creative responses.
The course will be restricted to 15 people and taught by demonstration and individual intuition.
Useful to Know
This is a hands-on workshop using paper pulp, water and paint so please wear practical clothing and bring an apron. You will be using A4 and also smaller or improvised moulds and deckles and vats of pulp to form our sheets of paper.
At the end of the day, you will be able to take your work home. This may still be damp so please bring plastic bags. Any leftover linen and cotton rag pulp can be taken home if you would like, so a 500ml jar or ziplock bag might be useful.
There will be an hour lunch break where you could book into our restaurant Light, visit one of the cafes near to Towner or bring a packed lunch to eat by the sea.
