Crafting Handmade Paper from Plants

Workshop Overview: Explore the art of hand papermaking by discovering the ideal plant materials and techniques involved.

In this course, participants will:
1)Begin by selecting raw materials.
2)Learn cooking, beating and sheet formation using basic equipment.
3) Experiment with creative techniques for producing high quality papers and artworks.

Experience the complete cycle of creation, from raw fibers to finished projects, with feedback provided for each project. The workshop will be both theoretical and practical, with opportunities for watching, asking questions, and engaging in debates during class sessions. Participants will have time between classes to practice the techniques demonstrated.

Workshop Details

This four-part series is an invitation to immerse yourself in a creative process with natural materials. The philosophy of Wabi-sabi will be our guide as we explore the myriad of possibilities using natural materials to create perfectly/imperfect sculptures. The series will begin by making non-traditional textured paper using flax roving for collage. The following weeks will focus on making a mold with wire mesh and plaster cloth for casting and building armatures with rattan using a lashing technique. Your textured paper will be applied over the form creating an organic fiber sculpture.

Workshop Details

Eco Sculpture Workshops with environmental artists Jan Alison Edwards BA PGDip and Fiona Campbell, MRSS. Complementing the Elemental Exhibition, 19th October – 10th November2024 on the JURASSIC COAST DORSET UK. Jurassic Coast, Dorset, UK.

An all day or weekend sculpture workshop to create nature-inspired sculptural work/s using found and recycled materials. Focused on assemblage sculpture, constructing rather than carving away, you will explore line, form, colour, texture, spatial relationships and the concept of transformation, using a range of 3-d skills.  The aim is to explore and experiment with creative ideas, processes and media (industrial and organic), and develop new skills including wirework and paper making techniques. You will be encouraged to be resourceful, experimental and improvisational with the sculpture making, gain confidence, and complete one or a series of small sculptures. Materials provided will include recycled wire, wood/natural debris, paper, metal, textiles, and miscellaneous components.

Suitable for artists and students who wish to develop a more sustainable practice.

Weekend or day courses available between the exhibition dates.
Small classes individual tuition.

Workshop Details

In this workshop, you will be guided in creating a stunning relief using pyramid-like paper components inspired by Larigami No. 1. You can personalize the color, size, and arrangement of the pieces to suit your creative vision.

Each shape is carefully cut, folded, and glued by hand. This process is repeated multiple times, as each relief is composed of many individual pieces. The activity is very relaxing—almost meditative. Once all the pieces are ready, the relief is arranged and assembled. Depending on the desired size, you can also expand and complete it at home.

The price includes: cutting templates (available as a PDF upon request), high-quality paper in various colors, an A3 base and glue.

Please bring: scissors and a bone folder (if you have one).

This powerful fact serves as a metaphor for the intricacies and ever-changing nature of life itself. By skillfully manipulating various elements and incorporating them into a multi-dimensional layered sculpture, we are able to effectively convey the intricate and multifaceted layers that constitute our unique life experiences.

Learn a variety of methods to strengthen and sculpt paper. Ancient oriental practices will be discussed and demonstrated as well as innovative techniques with natural materials. A unique method for armature will be shown.

This class is based on the Fused & Formed workshop with attention given to the how-to’s of three-dimensional design, surface embellishment and mould making.

During the two-day ONLINE workshop, you will learn how to make beautifully textured paper with flax roving and create shape by making a mould with wire mesh and plaster cloth. You will also focus on embellishing the surface with thread, ink and decorative paper.

Dieu Donné offers a variety of unique hands-on educational opportunities for adults and children that can be held on-site in our studio or at off-site locations.
