Workshop Details

State of Play offers artistic mentoring designed so that each participant can develop their own sustainable practice all while creating a personal project throughout the year.

It interweaves three intersecting and interconnected lines of work:
Cultivating curiosity and visual appetite «eye-petite” training the gaze and visual literacy. Working with constellation research processes, from intuition to organisation.

Engaging in manual and artisanal practices enables us to 'think with our hands,' thereby opening pathways to forms of intuitive knowledge.By entering a 'creative trance,' one can generate rapid, nonjudgmental images through experimental techniques that embrace error and invite surprise.
Granting space and permission to experiment, the sketchbook becomes both a vessel for an artistic practice and a sanctuary for the creative journey.

Application form and course prospectus are available as downloads on the IAPMA website below and below.

Visual Haiku with Flax Fiber Collage with Jacqueline Mallegni
A contemplative three-day creative retreat exploring Wabi-Sabi and natural materials

“Wabi-Sabi,” the Japanese aesthetic of impermanence and simplicity, will guide our creative journey in this meditative, hands-on retreat.
Together, we’ll explore the poetic potential of flax fiber, handmade paper, and found natural materials — weaving them into tactile collages that evoke a personal sense of place and quiet reflection.

Through texture, tone, and mark-making, you’ll learn to express the essence of landscape and memory. Using flax roving, ink, and natural dyes, we’ll move gently between making, observing, and refining — letting material and intuition shape each composition

Skies and Seascapes: a Papermaking Day Course with artist Jane Ponsford

United Kingdom

Event Dates

The workshop takes place from February 08, 2026 until February 08, 2026.

Workshop Initiator

Jane Ponsford Jane Ponsford

Workshop Details

A creative papermaking workshop inspired by the experimental and gestural marks J.M.W. Turner employed in his plein-air sketches and seascapes.

Join artist-papermaker Jane Ponsford to learn traditional papermaking techniques and create your own handmade linen and cotton rag paper. Experiment with delicate tints and dramatic sweeps of colour, using a colour pallette inspired by Impressions in Watercolour: J. M. W. Turner and his Contemporaries.

Participants can keep these sample sheets as they are or bind them together using a simple bookbinding technique to make their own book of skies.

During the course of the day, participants will discuss the types of paper that Turner and his contemporaries used and the watercolour pigments that were available at the time. This will be used as a background for our own creative responses.

The course will be restricted to 15 people and taught by demonstration and individual intuition.

Useful to Know
This is a hands-on workshop using paper pulp, water and paint so please wear practical clothing and bring an apron. You will be using A4 and also smaller or improvised moulds and deckles and vats of pulp to form our sheets of paper.

At the end of the day, you will be able to take your work home. This may still be damp so please bring plastic bags. Any leftover linen and cotton rag pulp can be taken home if you would like, so a 500ml jar or ziplock bag might be useful.

There will be an hour lunch break where you could book into our restaurant Light, visit one of the cafes near to Towner or bring a packed lunch to eat by the sea.

Accessibility
A budget is available to make this event as accessible as possible – this can include further interpretation services or other access arrangements we can meet to enable you to participate. If you require access arrangements, please email programme@townereastbourne.org.uk two weeks before the event date so that we can book a service if needed.

The workshop takes place from June 05, 2026 until June 07, 2026.

Workshop Initiator

Johannes Follmer Johannes Follmer , Gangolf Ulbricht, Berlin

In this course, participants will traditionally process Japanese mulberry fibers, i.e., soak, boil, clean, beat, and scoop, press, and dry A3-sized sheets. Participants will also work with ready-to-use mulberry bast fibers and with Lokhta, a Nepalese bast fiber.

This results in three different papers – in color, transparency, surface, gloss, and properties. The focus is on the Nagashizuki scooping method, the repeated immersion of the form and leaf formation with the aid of a formation tool. Special features and variations are also shown (floating sieve).

The course then enables participants to continue working independently in their own space, e.g. processing their own fibers (e.g. from the garden) and continuing with what they have learned.

Friday 2-6 p.m.
Saturday 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Sunday 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Additional offer (also accessible to guests)
Lecture date: Friday, June 5, 2026 at 7 p.m.
The lecture will present traditional Japanese papermaking by hand. During a year-long stay, the author followed the harvesting of the fibers and the processing of the various raw materials using different techniques in various workshops. The cultural context of paper in everyday life illuminates its diverse uses and demonstrates why washi paper still holds its place in modern life.
World claims.

Lecturer: Gangolf Ulbricht

Paper making at the Homburg paper mill

In this class, the focus will be on the artisanal production of individual sheets of paper. Among other things, I will demonstrate how a Dutchman can assist us in paper making. To produce a variety of papers, different colored fibers are provided, which offers the opportunity for further free improvisation and experimentation.

The key points are: the basics of handmade paper making, introduction to the raw materials, preparation and processing of the fiber pulp, making and pressing small sheets (up to A4 format), and introduction to drying methods.

A tour of our former family business is a must. The Homburg Paper Mill Museum is right next door and provides an insight into the former life and work of a paper-making family.

Consumables, coffee, and beverages are included in the price. Additional costs will be incurred for the return shipment of the dried papers.

Course duration:
Day 1: 1 p.m. - 6 p.m.

Day 3: 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

The proper technique for fixing pigments to the fiber surface will be taught—from delicate tints to intense colors. The correct use of fixatives and formation aids will also be explained in the course.

Participants will be introduced to the technique of pulp painting. The necessary tools will be presented and can then be used in their own free work at the vat. The course is not intended for the implementation of personal artistic projects. A workspace will be shared between two participants.
