The workshop takes place from May 19, 2018 until May 20, 2018.

Workshop Details

2 days     9:30-4:30      maximum # students 6   no experience necessary

Japanese paper is made up of inner bark fibers of traditional plants.  This fiber is soaked, cooked, rinsed and traditionally hand-beaten to form the paper pulp.  The long fibers are layered to form a sheet of paper using a different process than traditional Western made paper.  The result is a fine, translucent long fibered paper with some distinct qualities.  It is strong, good for calligraphy, printing, book arts, three-dimensional work and much more.  All aspects of fiber preparation will be covered in this class.  Three traditional fibers will be used: Abaca, Kozo and Gampi.  Basic equipment needed for future work will be discussed. Bring a towel and secure, non-slip shoes, ideas, questions, enthusiasm, notebook, lunch and beverage of choice.  Students will be working outside during part of the class so please dress according to the weather of the day.

Though classes may have a scheduled date, if  three to six people get together, we can find a date that suits us all!  Most papermaking classes are 2 days;

Joomchi- Paper Felting

New Zealand

Event Dates

The workshop takes place from April 22, 2018 until April 27, 2018.

Workshop Details

Joomchi is a traditional Korean paper technique very similar to felting except with paper. We will be playing with it in new and exciting ways to create multipurpose 'leather' paper. Layers of paper can be stitched before and after felting to creating voids and windows, 'felting' in ochres and chalk pastels can be used to imbed colour, dyed paper and tissue can be layered for bleeding colour. It can be dyed and painted, be drawn into and onto throughout the process, recycled artworks and found objects can be embedded and manipulated. It can be moulded around forms and sewn into shapes to make samples, wall pieces, vessels, bags and wearables.

It is an incredibly versatile technique and it can all be done with your feet!

No previous experience is necessary. We will be using commercial papers as well as whatever you would like to bring along to try.

Learn the unique natural plant sources, the processes of creation and make your special postcards with peaceful and relaxing nature sounds.

Instructor Mika Horie is a paper artist, and photographer. Two years ago, I pioneered to discover the history of wild Ganpi trees for producing Ganpi-shi, called “The king of paper” in Ishikawa, and explore the finest and northernmost point of its natural habitat. I work with spontaneity to capture the aesthetics of entire Japanese everyday lives and cultures by my daily photo-shoots, paper making and photographic printing. In my art studio “mume”, we will share Japanese familiar spaces, and the seasonally changing views of the submontane village.

Price: 5,000 JPY per person Time required: About 2 hours

I run my workshops with a maximum of three participants. Please ask if you are four or a larger family or group. The paper will be dried naturally, and sent after a few days, and will be sent free of

Special Effects in Drypoint

Australia

Event Dates

The workshop takes place from June 16, 2018 until June 17, 2018.

Workshop Details

Experiment with achieving aquatint and mezzotint effects on dry point etching plates without the chemicals. We will be using cardboard and acetate plates in this workshop to push dry point past the usual line work and cross hatching and into the world of tone and chiaroscuro. There is also an emphasis on using fine and handmade papers with some tricks of the trade to make handling plant fibre papers easier to use in etching. Short cuts to multiple colour prints will be another area to explore including experiments with collage techniques through the press like chin de colle. Intaglio printing is full of exciting techniques with lots of possibilities that don’t necessarily require much specialist equipment so this workshop is suitable for beginners and the more experienced print maker alike.

Van papier naar papier

Netherlands

Paper tot paper
Creating paper is fun to do and the result will make you very happy. In my studio at the Lindengracht in Amsterdam I do workshops for one day of papermaking. You first make pulp and practice creating and I show all kinds of examples. Then you go to work yourself and I help you where necessary and answer the questions that undoubtedly arise. At the end of the day you learned a lot about handmade paper and you can take a nice stack home with you.
In my studio we make paper of white and colored paper remnants.
The largest mould and deckle are A4 size.
Such a day is for a minimum and a maximum of two people and lasts from 11.00 to 16.00 o’clock and costs fifty euros per person. Children from eight years old can also participate well. Put together a duo and contact me, then we can arrange a date.
