More Information

Context is Everything
A portion of Monique Martin's exhibition 'annus mirabilis" will be included in this exhibition. The installation of real tree branches covered with 20,000  silkscreened paper butterflies comprise the entire exhibition, she will be installing about 3000 butterflies and 500 paper dandelions. The butterfly is a symbol of transformation and the pandemic and climate change have made everyone on the planet transform.

Monique Martin's dandelions bloom perpetually, mementos of the growing season, springing from concrete and tile, indoors and out. The dandelion is a silent protest that is heard worldwide on sidewalks, in parks and gardens. It abhors monoculture, is open to differences and challenges stereotypes. It can be a symbol for healing from emotional pain, physical injury and surviving through all life’s difficulties as it shows us how to be strong in the face of adversity.

More Information

Jurors Helen Hiebert and Eileen Wallace invited twenty-nine paper artists to demonstrate their insights as artists in the chaos of today's life and how they transform chaos into a vision of what is possible. Through the medium of paper with its boundless style, sustainability, and conceptual framework, the featured artists share their responses to chaos and demonstrate how the arts and sustainability can elevate inspiration and leave a lasting impression on communities.

Today we are witnessing sudden, surprising , and sometimes unexpected changes in our time and lifestyle. Anarchy, war, and disease have become our nation's daily concerns and only news. Even if we do not face these situations directly, in our social and economic lives, wherever we are, we witness the prevalence of chaos in various forms. Artists have shown their purpose, intention, and animating spirit in chaotic human situations in different ways, such as through visualizations, music, poetry, photography, etc.. They depict it in dream-like abstractions, express it in realistic depictions of life, inform the mind, or convey their empathy through art.

Through the historical endurance of paper and its various papermaking artforms, the twenty-nine featured artists issue an invitation to a quiet and peaceful moment that evokes a pleasurable experience that offers a little freedom from chaos.

This is the North American Hand Papermakers Juried Members' Exhibition.

Opening Hours

Wednesday to Sunday 2:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Location

Spazio Arte Contemporanea
Umberto I 108
entering from street Carducci 2 Robecchetto con Induno – MI

More Information

The collective exhibition "Venus in Furs" brings together a group of artists who have decided to express their creativity and their artworks projecting them as a life driven energy, the famous Eros described by Freud, named from the Greek god of love.

Each artist dialogs returning a large fresco where different areas of research investigate the contemporary fabric of existence using different mediums.

We talk about the theme of memory and the perception of time, memories from the past, the unconscious and its unexplored places, crossing the female body that appears sinuous and fluctuating like a veil or a sculpture.
The woman and her nowadays representation is examined while living her classic role of angel of the hearth. The female image is painted while she is locked up in suffocating domestic settings permeated with inflorescences or while dealing with common chores.

The displayed artworks are also linked to current events, to their social issues that involve anti- speciesism and the female world, outlining painful paths that lead to rebirth and self-discovery. Art has the social value of bringing people together, of unity, art acts like a collective ritual where the Greek principle of kalocagathia reigns, in this world beauty is goodness.

The collective exhibition “Venus in Furs” was possible thanks to the commitment of Loredana Galante, Marta Mez and Antonella Casazza, who created a committee that coordinated and fulfilled the project.

A Leaf a Gourd a Shell

United States

Event Dates

The exhibition is opened from February 01, 2024 until February 18, 2024.

Artist

Michelle Wilson Michelle Wilson

Opening Hours

Saturdays and Sundays, 12 - 5 pm
Reception, Tuesday, February 6, 7 - 9 pm

Location

Dream Farm Commons
349 15th St
Oakland, CA 94612

More Information

For February, Dream Farm Commons presents A leaf, a gourd, a shell…. Held in conjunction with the Codex International Book Art Fair, this installation explores how research and ideas are translated into art. As part of the Codex Event, join Dream Farm Commons on February 6, from 7-9 PM, for an evening of readings and performances by some of the artists showing their work at the Codex Book Fair. After the February 5 event, ephemera from the artists will be on display for the rest of the exhibition.

The phrase A leaf, a gourd, a shell… is borrowed from Ursula K. Le Guin’s short essay “The Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction”, wherein she builds on the hypothesis that the first cultural invention is the carrier bag, and expands that concept to include many items of everyday use until she arrives where she is headed: to the book. She writes: “A book holds words. Words hold things. They bear meanings. A novel (read: book) is a medicine bundle, holding things in a particular, powerful relation to one another and to us.” (parenthesis ours).

The exhibition will also include an iteration of the Rhinoceros Reading Room and Ephemera Collection, by the Rhinoceros Project, a collective made up of Anne Beck and Michelle Wilson. From their inception, the Rhinoceros Project has served as a portal, or carrier bag, to explore environmental collapse, extinction, colonialism, material metaphor and histories, celestial navigation, myth, revitalization, craft, meditation, and expanding consciousness, among other narratives.  The collection is an evolving collection of literature, research, found and created objects, maps and diagrams – that the Rhinoceros Project relied upon to anchor and communicate the vast web of topics that fuels their collaboration.

Interwoven – Solo Exhibition of Daniela Todorova

Bulgaria

Event Dates

The exhibition is opened from December 13, 2023 until February 13, 2024.

Artist

Daniela Todorova MA Daniela Todorova MA

Opening Hours

Tuesday to Saturday 11 am - 6 pm
Opening reception: December 13, 5–8 pm

Location

Serdika Gallery
ul. "Tsar Samuil" 90Б, ет. 2,
1202 Sofia Center, Sofia

More Information

The exhibition "Interwoven" is an artistic project by Daniela Todorova, the second in the year of her 60th anniversary after the successful exhibition in Sredets Gallery of the Ministry of Culture. She is an established author in the field of paper art and curator of the SOFIA PAPER ART FEST. This project is part of the “Solo Exhibitions” section and is the final event in this year’s festival programme.

For Daniela Todorova this exhibition is deeply emotional, interweaving past and present, memories and dreams, symbolism and abstractionism, woven into fragments and structures. The works are constructed from Japanese and Korean handmade papers weaving hemp and linen fibres, fragments of old book editions, ethereal vegetal elements and small scrolls of revelations. The works bear delicate reliefs characteristic of the artist’s style. The suggestion of the natural colours of the paper highlights her affinity for natural fibres enriched with symbolic reliefs.

The exhibition is realised with the financial support of the One-Year Grant program of the National Culture Fund of Bulgaria and the Calendar of Cultural Events of Sofia Municipality for 2023.

Fragmenta

Italy

Event Dates

The exhibition is opened from December 14, 2023 until February 10, 2024.

Artist

Silvia Beltrami Silvia Beltrami

Opening Hours

Tuesday to Saturday 10 am - 1 pm and 3 pm - 7:30 pm
Monday 3 pm - 7:30 pm

Location

Ticinese Art Gallery
C.so San Gottardo, 37
20136 Milano

More Information

The Ticinese Art Gallery concludes the 2023 season with the solo exhibition "Fragmenta" by Silvia Beltrami.

The project is projected towards a material investigation characterized by the fresco tearing technique, a procedure by which a fresco is taken away from its original wall, by removing the pictorial part and the surface plaster and then transferred onto a new support (calicot method from the name of the thin canvas also called "grandmother's rag" which is used to remove the fresco) where the artist subsequently intervenes by applying fragments of coated paper. Fragmenta draws inspiration from the current events of our times which, mediated by the mass media, become propaganda, not allowing space for free thought and therefore feeding homogenisation. These works reproduce reality using fragments of reality, interpreting new infinite lives through them, where each fragment has its own history and the more they are, the more they overlap with each other and the more they lose their original identity, quoting the movie by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert “Everything everywhere all at once”. Silvia Beltrami always places the figure as a point of reference, expressing in this way a poetics whose fulcrum is humanity, a humanity constantly running away from itself and from the others.

More Information

Griffiths’ Microfictions is an exhibition of intimate, small-scale vibrant paper works that explore geometric and gestural abstraction constructed from painted and cut layered paper. Using the laser cutter as a drawing tool- a random system of drawing, cutting, painting and paper inlay are used to create a multitude of passageways with optical nuances and oscillating patterns of color and repetition.

Starting with a vector based drawing of circular patterns reminiscent of tartans- patterns of criss-crossed horizontal and vertical bands in multiple colors historically used to designate a distinctive clan, an unexpected and altered design is created. Griffith manipulates each unique drawing field with multiple layers of painted and incised paper stacked on top of each other creating seductive passageways with depth and space.

These recent works range in scale from four by four inches to eleven by eleven inches, color and configuration. What started as an extension of Griffith’s interest in patterns found in perforated steel has evolved into a form of minimal abstraction; material and optical exploration. Each unique piece tells a different story- while constantly in motion they explore themes of identity and instability in a fragile world.

The building of the Academy of Fine Arts in Lodz, 121 Wojska Polskiego Street, room 129 - the Paper Workshop, which for more than 20 years has been a place of experimentation and exploration of artistic expression in the widely understood medium of paper. Our workshop is based on tradition and knowledge of handmade paper techniques.

The education at the studio is based on an almost journeyman-like introduction of students to higher and higher circles of initiation, and the exercises are constructed in such a way as to imperceptibly enrich the workshop skills of young art students. In my opinion, this is the only way, because education should be based on understanding the potential of the medium, which in our case is paper.

Presented at the Museum of Papermaking, the exhibition is a combination of early program assumptions with an ever-growing curiosity about paper matter and its potential in signaling the problems of the modern world: ecology and raw material processing. The exhibition will feature a selection of works by undergraduate and graduate students and graduates, completed in recent years under the direction of Prof. Ewa Latkowska-Zychska and myself - Dr. Magdalena Soboń, Prof. of the university, curator and head of the Paper Studio.

A small crew embarks on an adventure without captains. On the horizon, no white whale to chase. Theirs is, in fact, a colorful, visionary, enthusiastic challenge, yet at the same time rigorous, precise, and rational. In their works, Crew does not use paper as a writing surface, nor do they paint it. They play with thickness, the third dimension, the less explored and lesser-known surface. They manage to express themselves through the less noble side of paper, rugged, yet nonetheless a powerful and generous medium.

More Information

Wounding is an unavoidable human experience, with individuals and communities bearing scars and lasting reminders of moments and aftermaths of wounding. Some wounds cannot be healed, only carried; and the path to healing can be arduous. But wounding, although painful, can be transformative. ‘Where the light enters…’ uses damaged and repaired paper materials to create visual narratives of wounding and healing. The exhibition explores the idea that wounds, cracks, and brokenness allow light to penetrate spaces that would otherwise remain hidden, invisible, and unaddressed. Wounds and scars reveal the face of humanity, the value in imperfection and stories contained in brokenness. The myth and journey of the wounded healer acknowledges that damage is not always preventable, but can contain the seeds of healing. While wounds can break us; confronting the challenges of deep wounding can reveal insights that help us heal, create meaning and find new ways of being.
