The Gemeinschaft Bildender Künstler Straubing presents a thematic exhibition of its members entitled "Nah Dran" in the Weytterturm beginning May 6, 2023. "Close at hand" is about the elementary question of what moves a person in his or her life. Looking, seeing, contemplating, experiencing becomes more intense, more lasting, more interesting when a person approaches the living, the matter and lets the emotion approach him.
Tanja Major with "Mycobütten." Here you can see the motif "Ascomycota,"
between two acrylic plates that resemble an eyepiece. This is what tubular fungi can look like under a microscope. They form tubes and in them are the spores for further sexual reproduction. The spores are shot out of the tubes when they mature. The Ascomycota (ascomycetes, tubular fungi) form a separate division in the kingdom of fungi. These include popular edible mushrooms such as truffles, morels and many more.
The handmade mushroom paper works show new possibilities of paper production, they consist of almost 100% mushrooms and are therefore
a "compostable or sustainable art" that can be returned to nature or the forest.

Kristina Zimbakova's artwork included in the show 'Born to Fly' is made from acrylic and endemic lichen Usnea antarctica from King George Island, Antarctica, on self-handmade paper from 100 % wood-inhabiting fungi. The lichen-drawn inscription is the title of an eponymous play by Macedonian playwright Blagoja Risteski –Platnar, and it reads ‘Fly, Siljan.’ The Antarctic lichen (collected in Feb 2014) is courtesy of Prof. Alfredo Passo, Universidad Nacional del Comahue, Argentina. The work depicts the butterfly life cycle from an egg to an adult, when it eventually flies out of the painting into freedom. It symbolically represents the inner metamorphosis of a person, shedding constraints and surpassing adversity, and emerging of a new, liberated self.
Tanya Major's art included in the show is tilted "Investment- Paper,"
Nature as the most valuable share in climate change. It is fungi-paper, circles with gold-plated wood embossing each 50 cm diameter. Here Tanja Major shows mushroom paper with a tree bark embossing that is gold-plated. Europe, the USA and other countries have the highest global paper consumption per capita. To meet the demand for paper, the industry cultivates fast-growing woods on mostly former rainforest areas. This is a problem because the loss of tropical rainforests in particular is increasing worldwide and the extinction of animal and plant species is progressing. The local population loses its livelihood with the deforestation of rainforest. Other ways of making paper, such as from mushrooms could change our situation of radical deforestation of rainforests. We should rethink!

It is an international and annual festival exhibiting the best of contemporary developments in paper art, and a two-time winner of the Festivals for Europe' (EFFE), awarded periodically by the European Festival Association.

Siegried Bresler, under the patronage of DEG (German Exlibris Society) and HVG (Heinrich Vogeler Society) and with the support of the Heinrich Vogeler Foundation Haus im Schluh, has organized an ex-libris and small graphics competition on the theme 'Heinrich Vogeler 150.' 72 artists from 13 countries have submitted 100 prints showing the results of their individual examination of Heinrich Vogeler, their interpretation of his life and work, and their assessment of his significance for cultural, social and political development in Europe.
After the presentation at the Museum Haus im Schluh in Worpswede, the exhibition is currently on display at the DEG conference in Paderborn.

The exhibition 'Ethereal' is an artist project by Daniela Todorova, an established artist in the field of paper art and curator of Sofia Paper Art Fest. This project is part of the "Solo Exhibitions" section and has a special place in this year's festival program, marking the 60th anniversary of its curator and creator. The project is dedicated to a favorite topic for the artist – light and its multilayered dimensions. The exhibition is made up of paintings and paper panels united by installation works with light. Daniela Todorova has great merit for the presentation of this art, her preferred medium. The combination of paper and relief structures complements the sense of movement and lightness she wants to convey.
“The main focus of my oeuvre, regardless of the medium, is interweaving spiritual messages into symbolic works. Philosophers define the Ether (quintessence) as the highest layer of air. This is almost invisible but very powerful energy has always been the body of research in the works I create. It is the fifth element associated with the divine. My spiritual journeys into the unknown invisible world and the encounter with that pure and gentle substance, the Ether, are part of my visions and searches in art. The messages I send are part of meditative states of contemplation and penetrating behind the veil of the visible in touch with the light. Ras Al Khaimah Fine Arts Festival (RAKFAF), a nonprofit community arts festival designed to showcase the work of local and emerging artists, photographers, and filmmakers and engage the community through a diverse calendar of cultural and creative programming.
As a part of artist in Residence programme. Masarratfatima Sulaimani will exhibit her solo exhibition during the festival. The installation titled 'Footprints' is a celebration of the relationship between nature and humankind. Inspired by these elements, the installation explores the ongoing dialogue between these two entities, as one continues to take over the other—like water washing over footprints—and yet neither stops moving.
The artist's intent behind this piece was to create a reflection on the common characteristics and duality of both elements: both being so strong yet equally fragile. It also highlights how our presence on earth affects nature, and vice versa: we leave our marks on our surroundings as we pass through them, but those marks will eventually wash away or be reclaimed by nature in turn. The installation is made of paper by hand cutting it and for some parts- papers are hand-made from plants found in Ras Al Khaimah. Each piece is uniquely created to create the impression of a trail through a surrealistic representation of nature and man-made spaces.

Paper - A Cross-Cultural Voice is an exhibition focusing on handmade paper as an artistic means of expression and the role of paper as a medium for cultural exchange. Thirteen artists from India and the Western part of the world exhibit works created in paper, where the paper is not merely the physical surface supporting a creative gesture but forms the compositional space, the secret laboratory of expression.
The exhibition is curated by Anne Vilsbøll and supported in Denmark by Knud Højgaards Fond, Beckett-Fonden, Nordea Fonden, Toyota Fonden, Jyllands-Postens Fond and The Danish Art Fund's Project Support Committee for Visual arts, support for exhibition program in 2022 at Kunstcenter Silkeborg Bad, DK. This exhibition is showcasing the Korean art of Hanji craft using both traditional and modern techniques.
Jan has been creating Hanji pieces for over 20 years and has a passion for Hanji and using the paper in many different ways. She will be exhibiting pieces of furniture constructed out of cardboard and embellished with a wide variety of Hanji papers as well as some delicate lamps, all made using Hanji paper, string and cardboard.
This exhibition will also include works by Jan Crook who is exhibiting contemporary Hanji pictures using a mixture of paper and paints. Judith Stephens has hooked beautiful Korean inspired rugs.
Jan Coveney's Hanji students will also be exhibiting some pieces that they have created over the last year.

East–West is the last exhibition in the program Sofia Paper Art Festival 2022. After presenting a variety of exhibitions as part of the festival's largest section, the Paper Art Biennial, the focus is now on sculpture and installation. The exhibition shows a selection of artists who are fascinated by three-dimensional possibilities. At the same time, we are launching a long-term exchange project between Bulgaria and Germany, which will continue over the next few years with traveling formats in both countries.
The selected artists will present works in different styles and with diverse messages. The installations and objects overflow with structures and volumes in the range of white and black. Other artists use the illusion of volume or focus on reliefs, while others prefer amorphous forms in soft, earthy tones. Some of the artists occupy the space with luminous works that are a counterpoint to others that rely on lush color.
The exhibition EAST-WEST aims to question certain aspects of sculpture and installation outside of the exhibition space, even though this particular exhibition presents more intimate works set in the gallery. The discussion about the new technologies in sculpture, the lectures on contemporary sculpture in urban and natural environments, the presentations by individual artists, and international sculpture events are among the important topics addressed in the program. The possibilities of three-dimensional works and the new technologies provoke new means of expression and this raises a number of questions and seeks innovative solutions.

Paper is a fragile material, it can tear, crumple, discolor and deform. At the same time, it possesses resistance and can be one of the most durable materials, depending on thickness and quality. Ina Fekken works with paper, because the properties enhance the expressiveness of her work. Ina uses this material to make an installation in the Grote Kerk in Emmen.

Women have been involved in the printing and production of books in what became the United States since Elizabeth Glover established a press in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1638. After the passage of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 forced her to flee the United States, Mary Ann Shadd, an African American woman, founded and published The Provincial Freeman, an antislavery newspaper, in 1853 in Ontario, Canada. This exhibition celebrates the important history of women in printing and publishing by featuring ten women artists, illustrators, and printers currently working on the West Coast of the United States. Through individual efforts and collaborations, apprenticing and mentoring, they produce stunning objects that push our understanding of “the book” and the role it can play in questioning the world we live in and celebrating contemporary efforts to achieve a more just, inclusive, and diverse society.
The title of the exhibition, “A Few Words Worn Around the Edges, Pressed Into Something soft,” is a quote from Inge Bruggeman’s, The Quickest Forever (2017), which is displayed in Case 3.

The title Déjà Vu ( All Over Again) references the overall theme of memory in the works and the fact that some of the pieces have been exhibited previously. The memories are personal, cultural, digital, or some combination. Miller's exploration of unusual ways of sharing memories is influenced by a life-long fascination with alternative forms of communication such as infographics and cryptography. A personal iconography substitutes colours and symbols, materials and processes for words and pictures.
The works in the exhibition were made using modified forms of traditional paper manipulation such as origami in combination with re-interpretations of traditional textile processes.

Truth is a rich and provocative subject in today’s world which one might say is more attuned to “truthiness,” the quality of seeming to be true out of a desire for something to be true, as coined by Stephen Colbert.
The concept of truth has long been associated with books, and there was a time when the printed word was taken for truth. In a gentler century, Emily Dickinson wrote, “Tell all the truth but tell it slant,” not wishing to shock with the totality of a revelation all at once. Our digital world lacks this subtlety and our culture fiercely defends the principle that we’re each entitled to our own truth.
Twenty-seven artists were invited to show works that are expressions about truth in the form of handmade, handbound artist books both unique and in small editions, altered books, folded or sculptural books and very limited edition broadsides.

In recent years, Loes Schepens has started to make more art (again) from native Dutch plants. The fever toward using purely natural materials has flared up, so to speak. Perhaps it has to do with the awareness we are seeing lately about the importance of nature. Schepens saw that importance earlier, by the way, but it gets an extra layer of understanding this way. Her chosen materials such as flax or evening primrose are a source of research and stories. For example, flax has a tremendous history in the linen industry and evening primrose has medicinal properties. Two different starting points leading to different works. These can be seen, along with several works with other plants in the exhibition "Plant Fever".
