“Materials of Light”

Painting, cyanotype, plant fibres, paper — throughout the year, these materials have been in conversation. From the whiteness of the solstice to the blossoming of spring, from the sun-soaked blue of summer to the vaporous density of autumn, each gesture has captured, held, and at times revealed a trace of light.

The exhibition brings these fragments together like an intimate memory of time: surfaces that preserve an imprint, fibres that hold shadows, earths that awaken colour. Here, technique is not an end but a language — one that speaks of transformation, transience, and persistence.

As the year draws to a close and the days grow shorter, these works extend the glow: they invite slowing down, contemplation, and shared moments.

Williams Museum of Papermaking is proud to feature the work of three contemporary artists—Helen Hiebert, Nancy Cohen, and Sara Garden Armstrong—whose practices embody the spirit of innovation while reflecting on longstanding traditions. Each artist brings a unique voice to the medium: Hiebert’s luminous constructions explore the interplay of light and structure; Cohen’s sculptural works reflect ecological fragility and resilience; and Armstrong’s immersive environments blur the boundaries between the organic and the engineered. Together, their works speak to the transformative potential of paper—not only as a surface for expression but as a sculptural, spatial, and conceptual force. Through their hands, paper becomes a language of memory, a vessel of emotion, and a bridge between past and present.

I constantly draw, I beat and pigment my paper pulp, I print my own prints—It is all part of the methodology of understanding something about my place in the complex and tantalizing world that I think about all the time. A vivid connection with the many different materials I use, as well as with the concepts that vie for space in my practice, root me in my work." Lynn Sures

Walk in Paper

Netherlands

Event Dates

The exhibition is opened from December 17, 2025 until January 11, 2026.

Artist

Josefien Alkema Josefien Alkema

Opening Hours

Wednesday to Sunday 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.

Location

Kunstlievend Genootschap Pictura
Sint Walburgstraat 1
9712 HX Groningen

More Information

Based on her impressions and experiences of being outdoors, Alkema composes her own unique landscape, with attention to organic structures and the dynamics of wind, water, and light. In this exhibition, you take a walk through that world. Wander through the silence and rhythm of nature in collages and sculptures, collected pieces of the cosmos and the earth.

In recent years, Josefien Alkema's work has developed from drawings, through collages, to spatial work. At its core is the graphic quality of drawing: ink, charcoal, or pencil on paper. The collages and sculptures are made from old drawings or large pieces of paper from a roll, which have been pre-treated with textures. By folding and modeling the paper, Alkema creates forms she calls “cosmic ornaments”: paper sculptures that are mysterious and abstract, but also tangible and earthy. They give shape to experiences for which there are no words.

Whispers

Poland

Event Dates

The exhibition is opened from November 04, 2025 until January 04, 2026.

Artist

Anna Goebel

Opening Hours

Monday - Museum closed
Tuesday to Sunday 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Location

Kłodzka Street 42
57-340 Duszniki-Zdrój

More Information

The exhibition “Whispers” presents a selection of works by Anna Goebel – an artist who, since the 1990s, has demonstrated the immense creative potential of the natural world around us. Organic materials have found their way into the Duszniki Paper Mill, undergoing a metamorphosis under the artist’s attentive gaze as they are transformed into works of art.

Anna Goebel’s structural and spatial artworks, constructed from organic materials such as moss, leaves, and pine needles, harmonize visually with the historic drying room of the Duszniki Paper Mill. Just as paper was once produced here from old rags, her works are also created from organic waste — discarded by both nature and humans. Today, they extend the meaning of this historic space, evoking associations with the forest and wood — both an artistic medium and the building material of the Duszniki Paper Mill.

Event Dates

Artist

Priscilla Robinson Priscilla Robinson

Opening reception, Saturday, December 6, 6 - 8 p.m.

Location

Wally Workman Gallery
1202 West 6th St
Austin, Texas  78703

More Information

This exhibition explores transitions—the space between contrasts. Priscilla Robinson is drawn to the void between front and back, up and down, dark and light. These spaces are charged with potential and ambiguity. The focus brings her to the spaces between boundaries—the voids, the space holes, the breath between forms. Priscilla works with small paper units—feathers, cones, spheres, rolled spirals—grouping and layering them to build larger wholes. Each unit is complete in itself, but together they reveal the harmony of the part and of the whole.

In contrast to traditional painting, where brushstrokes build toward composition, the artist begins with a mass of three-dimensional brushstrokes—handmade paper units—and uses them to discover movement, color, and rhythm.

In this solo exhibition, there will be 14 pieces in the exhibition in 2 rooms of the gallery.

Location

More Information

In this digital age of mass mailings and instant email exchanges, we are proposing an exhibition dedicated to the postcard and to mail art. Objects of memory, communication, and creation, postcards have long served as a medium for many avant-garde artists.

The exhibition will present a wide range of artists’ postcards, reflecting the diversity of approaches and eras. In addition, an open call will be launched : during a set period, all artists who wish to participate will be able to send us one or several postcards. These will be exhibited without selection or jury, in a spirit of openness and inclusion.

Mail art, especially during certain periods of political repression, offered a free and inventive alternative to censorship. The envelope or postcard thus became a medium of expression — sometimes subversive, often poetic.

As Maïten Bouisset puts it : Is mail art an art for initiates or an initiated art ? After the pioneers of the 1960s and 1970s, a new generation of artists has continued this practice, making use of the many possibilities offered by printing techniques.

The postcard, like mail art, allows contemporary art to be approached in a more accessible way. It connects artistic practices to a universal experience — that of sending or receiving a postcard. This popular approach opens a doorway into art that is at once intimate, collective, and spontaneous.

In other well-known buildings and venues in Nicosia, six members of the association have set up solo exhibitions:

Inci Kansu: with her famous Copper Tunnel;

Ismet Tatar: with her installation depicting the history of private pain;

Emel Samioğlu: her installation is about her family’s history connected to the sea;

Simge Uygur: her installation is a critical perspective that questions the exploitation of the female body throughout history;

Kemal Behçet Caymaz: with his installation ‘Genesis’;

Sevda Orr: her installation envisions intertwined roots as a visual metaphor for human relationships.

It was a welcome and great challenge for the association to join the call of the Biennale organisers to make a loud statement on the great problems of humanity.

Collective Grief - In Memoriam

United States

Event Dates

The exhibition is opened from October 25, 2025 until December 03, 2025.

Artist

Lori Goodman Lori Goodman , Teddy Milder Teddy Milder

Opening Hours

Opening Public Reception: Saturday, October 25, 2025, 4 – 6 p.m.
Gallery hours: Thursday – Sunday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Location

1 Commandant’s Lane
Benicia, CA 94510 USA

More Information

In 2023, Lori Goodman and Teddy Milder traveled to Germany and Poland, returning just when the Israeli kidnappings and subsequent horrific Gaza war began. They reflected on the mass killings of the holocaust; genocide, war and devastation in Gaza; and atrocities that are now occurring and have been throughout history, including the current threats on democracy. They were simultaneously inspired to make work to mark collective grief. The collaboration began to hold and process their personal and shared grief — a means of witnessing loss and channeling sorrow into material form.

Teddy and Lori created over 100 black sculptures of handmade, pigmented and dyed abaca and kozo paper. After completing the dark pieces, we wanted to leave the work with a gesture toward healing and hope. We created additional sculptures, this time pigmented with a saffron hue—an offering of light.

It is their hope that the installation reflects finding beauty in the struggle to nurture hope, while remembering and honoring the devastation, loss of life, and culture due to senseless violence, atrocity and war. They hold all who suffered and died in memoriam.

Opening Hours

Daily 11 a.m. - 7 p.m.

Location

Gallery Threshold
C-221, Block C
Sarvodaya Enclave
New Delhi, Delhi 110017

More Information

Ravikaumar Kashi holds her solo show, Shadows of Breath, at Gallery Threshold in Delhi.

Shadows of Breath is an exploration of the intimate relationship between paper and the invisible, yet visceral, experience of inner life. This collection of works begins with a simple premise: that paper can serve as an effective analogy for the ephemeral body, a material that's both fragile and resilient, recording presences and absences.

Through the meditative and gestural process of pulp painting, each piece becomes a vessel, holding the haptic imprints of touch, texture, and pressure. These works embody the dual presence of what is there and what is absent, transforming paper from a mere surface into a porous, vulnerable body itself. The title refers to the fleeting, subtle marks—the shadows—left by the internal rhythms of life—the breath.

The relationship between paper and language is age-old. Here, however, instead of text appearing on paper, the paper itself transforms or merges with the text, thereby converging the metaphors of body and language. Language is treated as a skin, as well as the very trace of a thought, a whispered presence, or a held silence. The words we use, the stories we tell, and the silence we keep are all layers of a material that carries the spectral yet weighty essence of our identity.

In this exhibition, the fragility of paper, the echoes of the body, and the weight of language all coalesce into a conversation about the unspoken and the internal in the human experience. Ultimately, Shadows of Breath presents paper as an invocation of the enduring interplay between our physical form and the ethereal nature of our inner world.

More Information

Five artists explore the themes of nature and time through painting, sculpture, performance, photography, and drawing. The focus is on the changeability and transience of processes and forms. Art needs time to develop, and artists develop it through interaction with other people, with nature, and with materials. Each work shows how transience also means transformative power. The works weave together the present, change, and memory into an open sensory impression. The exhibition invites visitors to observe the slow breath of nature and art.

“Not yet”—an invitation to also give space to the creative process.
Art as a snapshot of ongoing change.

Location

More Information

This is not just an exhibition of works in a place. The aim is to expose the place itself.

"Window on Wall" / Elisabeth Beurret, is an installation that I present in one of the rooms of the castle, as a paper art artist.

From the wall facing one of the large bay windows, opening onto the landscape of the Ardèche mountains, extract the irregular pattern of the masonry joints.Transpose it into a plant veil suspended in front of the window, created with iris papers playing on different textures and the duality between opacity and transparency.

What is at work is a play of contrasts between the permanent hardness of the stone and the slight fragility of the paper, between the rhythms of the window panes and the wall joints."Window on Wall" combines materials, light, and landscape: the stone is transformed into a living writing.

Part of Het Ziltepad is now described and runs along the Frisian and Groningen churches. The route currently consists of nine stages of 15-25 kilometers that you can walk or cycle.
The distinctive churches can be seen from afar. Built on mounds and terps, they tower above the landscape. Along the way, there are various activities you can participate in. On the stage pages, you can see what there is to experience along the route. You can stay in one of the cozy hotels and B&Bs, at a villager's home, or like a true pilgrim in the church.

In several churches along the route you can discover works af art. The papersculptures of Alkema are on diplay in the church of Uithuizermeeden.

Closing event on October 26, 2025, at 3 p.m., with the artist in attendance

Location

Abtei Wunstorf
Wasserzucht 1
31515 Wunstorf

More Information

In her work, Manuela Mordhorst explores the multifaceted world of inner and outer landscapes. Her paintings and paper works are more than just representations of our designed living environment; they also reflect our surroundings. In the tension between humans and nature, she creates a dialogue that reflects the fragile relationship between the two.

For the artist, her works are like diary entries—personal memories and emotions merge with abstracted scenes in her paintings and with partially torn, fragmented surfaces in her paper art. The depicted haptic surfaces, forms, cracks, and structures seek an inner assignment in the diversity of our world and thus become a symbol of human existence and personal experience in dealing with nature. Mordhorst's art invites us to rethink our own connection to nature, to discover it, and to appreciate its changeability.

Location

Abbaye Romane d'Alspach

Coordonnées GP N 48*9*13 / E 7*14*13

More Information

Words and nature are at the heart of Lola Greenwich's artistic approach. Her inspiration often comes from passages in literary works, poems and haikus. They awaken her creative desires and generate ideas and images that take shape under her fingers as she works with paper.

The raw material for her work is paper fibre: recycled paper, rag paper, but above all plant-based paper. Nature inspires her. She draws on its resources to recreate moments gleaned, felt, stolen from time. Outside of time and seasons.

This exhibition invites you to immerse yourself in the words that have touched her soul and journey through nature and the changing seasons. Each work is accompanied by the text that served as its inspiration. This is written on handmade paper, made with paper pulp from the factory, collected by the artist during her visits to the Abbey.

Special exhibition: The ETA European Textile Academy Bolzano

Organic, vibrant, revolutionary: The material design of the mushroom mycobuts.

The world of „savoir-faire“
A meticulous search for precision characterizes these skilled trades. The passion for extremely well-executed work can be sensually grasped: admiration, understanding, tasting and smelling. The combination with a sense of innovation and #Kunst as well as respect for the great cultural heritage finds expression in the perfection of a savoir-faire that can only be mastered by the human hand.

The ambience
In the middle of Bolzano's greenery, surrounded by vineyards and just a few minutes' walk from Bolzano's old town, is the @maretsch_mareccio, combining the flair of a typical Renaissance residence with the demands of a modern event location. First mentioned in the 13th century, the castle was owned by the von Maretsch family until the middle of the 15th century, before it passed to the Römer family. The castle was then expanded into a Renaissance residence and became a reference point for nobles in the 16th century. It has been run by the Bolzano Palaces Foundation since 2007.

The Parallels of Reconstruction <=> Deconstruction; Possibly

Philippines

Event Dates

The exhibition is opened from August 01, 2025 until September 30, 2025.

Artist

April Capalungan April Capalungan

Location

First United Building, Escolta, Manila

More Information

"The Parallels of Reconstruction ⇌ Deconstruction; possibly” is an interactive mobile paper sculpture retelling the possibilities of experience and ideas continuously taking shape and refocusing what preservation and/or transformation could be.

Installed along the spiral stairs of First United Building (FUB), its presence is a peek into fragility, resilience, and something time-bound bridging people, space, and material through a quiet tension of peripheral limitations, intuitive manipulation of a seemingly delicate yet resilient materiality of paper interacting within the spatial architectural folds of the heritage site.

Its longevity is based on the interaction of people as it (un)folds, a balancing act between the polarities about fear of uncertainties and the yearning to be transformed – in stillness and in motion.

Into the Deep

Australia

Event Dates

The exhibition is opened from July 05, 2025 until September 28, 2025.

Artist

Bridget Hillebrand Bridget Hillebrand

Opening Hours

Daily 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Location

Latrobe Regional Gallery
138 Commercial Road
Morwell, Victoria 3840

More Information

Latrobe Regional Gallery is thrilled to present a major new solo exhibition by acclaimed Victorian artist Bridget Hillebrand, inspired by the coastal waters of Southern Victoria. Into the Deep is a new large-scale installation informed by Hillebrand’s ongoing concern for ecological shifts occurring beneath the ocean’s surface.

In an age of hyper-visibility, the deep ocean is resistant to our usual ways of seeing, with more than 80% of our oceans yet to be mapped, explored or even seen by humans. Into the Deep invites viewers to wade into an intimate meditation on the transience and fragility of our deepest waters, accompanied by a soundscape evoking the depths of the underwater realm. Dr Bridget Hillebrand is an interdisciplinary artist based in Naarm/Melbourne whose practice intertwines art, science and environmental consciousness. This spectacular immersive installation is not to be missed.
