High up in the Barberachurch are works of art on display, especially made for the exhibition "Flying Free". A theme inspired by 75 years of liberation.
Ina Fekken looked at photos and films made during the liberation and discovered waving people, some of them with a white handkerchief, that triggered her: a simple utensil that reflects various feelings / emotions of human existence. Meanwhile it is almost disappearing from modern life. The artist created an artwork motivated by this fact.

Joanne B Kaar  was invited by the British lichen Society and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Edinburgh, to exhibit 'North', her embossed paper coat inspired by coastal lichens, and a selection of here watercolour studies of rocks.

"...Lichens are one of the richest parts of Scotland's internationally important diversity and RBGE has a long legacy of promoting their scientific understanding.
They are also a constant source of wonder for artists: the splashes of colour on our rocky shores; the surprising quiet filigree of finely-wrought life on a winter twig; the luxurious tapestry draping and dripping off limbs in the western woods. Many are equally intrigued by the very special relationships between the fungi, algae and cyanobacteria that live together symbiotically as lichens.

Writer, Emily Rapp Black and artist, Carrie Scanga will interpret viewers’ stories of medical circumstances in visual and textual forms in an ever-changing paper installation accompanied by written text.
In each venue, viewers are invited to record and submit their stories within the immersive installation. After each venue, Scanga and Black will dismantle the sculpture and read/listen to all submitted stories, identifying moments of rupture, healing, working-through, and/or peace. Based on viewers’ submissions, the collaborators will change both the paper structure of the installation and the textual accompaniment. Blacks’ accompanying essays will provide intellectual context by interweaving viewers’ submitted stories with trauma theory, philosophy, and personal experience.

All submissions will be kept anonymous. SANCTUARY is a living installation, a space that hears experiences of those working in, admitted to, or visiting medical centers. It seeks to have communal, cultural, and intellectual impact. Medical conditions often create feelings of isolation; by comingling two powerful modalities—visual and textual--SANCTUARY actively reverses such isolation. The changing installation echoes the idea that collective storytelling acts as a dynamic vehicle for individual and social change. SANCTUARY demonstrates new ways of thinking about peoples’ life experiences that involve medical care, moving beyond commonly-used terms such as “survival” and “resiliency.” Rather than viewing recovery as the end goal, our project encourages medical conditions and recovery to co-exist, giving visual and verbal forms to both processes.

Throughout history, the paucity of women-artist representations has been an impediment in the bid towards diversification within the art world. As ZeeArts Gallery attempts to realign the skewed perspectives of gendered narrations in the institution of art, the Gallery has put together a compendium of women artists on a global scale across 5 continents (Europe, Middle-East & Africa, Asia, Americas, and Oceania).The commemorative pursuits alongside International Women’s Day seek to empower and provide opportunities for female artists to reflect upon the entrepreneurial adversities they face while revising their strategies throughout the promotion of gender parity.

Fides Linien is invited to present her latest artwork ,Fusion‘. She will represent the country of her origin, Germany. The artist uses her self-made handmade papers to create unique works of art from different types of self-made paper and yarn. The artist calls these delicate paper artworks CartaStaminea (Latin: carta - paper, stamineus - full of threads):

The motif is set with yarn and paper inlays according to the drawn draft underneath the wet sheet of handmade paper, which is finally covered by another sheet of handmade paper on top of it. Finally, the draft behind is removed and the motif consists solely of yarn and paper inlays between two sheets of paper. The motif is in the paper, the lines are yarn, and the filled areas are yarn strung together. Typical for those paper artworks are their more or less transparent parts. Fides Linien developed this special technique beginning in 2007 and continues to explore this method today.

In 1983, Park Seo-Bo began using hanji paper, the traditional Korean paper made from the bark of the mulberry tree. In this process, the paper is moistened and applied in layers to the canvas, formed with various tools and then processed to create a sculptural picture surface. This development, together with the introduction of color, allowed Park to expand his artistic practice without abandoning his desire to create emptiness through reduction.
The exhibition will take place throughout the museum and comprises 40 works that provide a broad overview of his practice.

Minjung Kim's abstract paintings are created using layers of Hanji – a traditional Korean paper made from the inner bark of mulberry trees. Using the rhythm of her breath on a lit incense stick, she gently and rhythmically burns the edges of each individual strip, and using a traditional Korean gluing technique painstakingly collages these strips, layer by layer, onto a larger Hanji surface.

THE DANCE - process description
'We are two artists, a paper artist and a painter, who have created a common work with basis in our various area of work. Because we have a common pleasure in looking on paintings with dancing figures, we were inspired to create the artwork THE  DANCE.
Dancing can give pleasure, movement, rhythm, music, gathering and memories. This was the starting-point for our work. We created sketches and carried out experiments with form, structure, contrasts and materials.
The results became 10 objects around 50 cm height - gathered two and two together to 5 pairs, who dance together in a circle of a diameter of 130 cm.'

When making my most recent work about climate change I created paper from cotton workmen’s shirts and bed sheets donated to the families who were affected by floods in north Queensland. To this paper pulp I added soot and burnt leaf inclusions which were washed onto the beach after the rolling succession of Australian bushfires. Onto these papers I stitched  crushed paper stained with orange, red and black ink to represent fiery embers.
In my artist residency in Iceland in 2019, I made paper denoting ‘melting glaciers’ also from the same bed linen paper pulp and embedded it into sections of washed up fishing net which had been mended and re-mended. In previous work about the northern NSW floods of 2017 when my art studio was flooded, I collaged flood marked and silt stained papers together to create a narrative of survival and resilience .

These materials carry the energy of places affected by climate change. They are a metaphor for our planetary interconnectedness and speak of the hopeful efforts to address and mend this climatic emergency.

Caithness artist, Joanne B Kaar has been inspired by events reported in the John O’Groat Journal 100 years ago, when daring aviators, Harry G Hawker and Commander K Mackenzie Grieve, left St. John’s Newfoundland, attempting to cross the Atlantic non-stop. 
Engine problems resulted in them ditching in the Atlantic. Rescued, they were brought to Scrabster, Caithness, in the north of Scotland,  where a crowd had gathered to welcome them. They were later decorated with the Cross of the Royal Air Force.

In the exhibition Again and Again, works created during the last years by fine artist Hana Altaratz are exhibited. The paper artworks are composed of etching prints on self made recycled paper. This paper evokes the textures of walls of a cave, old scripts or antique frescoes. It has uneven edges, and monochromatic colors. Furthermore, the self-made paper artworks serve the items that attract and inspire the artist: items that lost their shiny days and therefore, reveal the beauty of ancient ages.

Curators, Katy DeMent (paper maker) and Ann Rosenthal ( print maker, illustrator) wanted to take an expansive view of climate change — that it is an opportunity to be and act in a world that is in relationship with one another and with nature. We have done this by demonstrating how artists are responding to these concerns, highlighting the materials they use to create their work. Not all of our materials and processes “leave no trace,” but all the exhibiting artists are moving in that direction, as our culture and society must also move toward.

How do the artists you’ve worked with for this show deal with their own practices and choices of materials as they affect climate change?
Both Katy DeMent and Albert Pantone reflect their local ecosystems through the reuse of sustainably sourced materials. They harvest invasive plants and grow plant fibers for their papermaking processes, a continuation of work they began years ago out of necessity. By engaging ephemeral materials, nothing is arbitrary and the actual surfaces, as well as the imagery, are referential.

Creatives for Climate (C4C) is a Pittsburgh-based collaborative of artists, designers, architects, climate communicators, climate scientists and climate educators. As part of its mission, C4C produces exhibitions that spark community dialogue around climate change. We were looking for an exhibition venue that would highlight some of the artists in our collaborative and approached Contemporary Craft’s (CC) Director of Exhibitions Kate Lydon.

Through the Walls: Reflections includes work that Teddy Milder made, or was inspired by two artist residencies in Oaxaca in 2016 and 2018 and the looming threat of a border wall construction. She printed and stitched her photographs on amate and cotton paper she made at Arte Papel Oaxaca in San Augustín Etla. Adding enhancements and embellishments into each image, the artist's stitches were intertwined with paper walls. Inspired by ancient Oaxacan textile and wall patterns of Mitla, Teddy looked for openings, or spaces in between. Three-dimensional paper work and thread drawings invoke passages through the walls.

Wendy Briggs Powell (US) submerges large sheets of paper into dyed water. These “watermarks” are at once both simple and complex and reflect to her a lived emotional experience. Her work connects heart, head and hands while aiming to convey the subtleties and nuances of the human emotional condition.

The works of Anna Bludau-Hary (Germany) are mostly organic-looking objects are bizarre and yet beautiful and mysterious. They play poetically with inside and outside, with light and its shadow.

The exhibition was designed and produced by Aïdée Bernard. It is the result of the author's personal artistic approach and conception: Plastic artist, Aïdée Bernard creates art costumes with vegetable fibres carried, diaphanous sculptures and book objects where paper becomes a separate mode of expression whole, fiber-sign, watermark, skin material. All the celluloses obtained to make her works are extracted from plants.

Joanne B Kaar is one of 6 invited artists working in different media who have been collaborating periodically throughout 2019 to create a joint response to the environment, history and community of Inverewe Gardens, each focusing on a different broad, intertwining theme.

Joanne B Kaar -  Mail Bag.

Weaving together facts, fiction & folklore about the local postal system and the beginnings of Inverewe Gardens, my research based artwork has a strong sense of place.

The postmen from the mailboat on its way from Stornoway to Poolewe purchased a fair wind of three knots from a wise woman in Stornoway. Against advice, they untied the third knot as they approached Inverewe. A storm blew up, they were dashed ashore and it blew all of the thatch off the houses in the area. Now, that mail bag was lost and it contained correspondence, packets of black earth from afar, and many of the seeds and plants ordered by Osgood H Mackenzie for his new walled garden. Found, months later, seedlings had started to grow out of it and letters were blown to the wind. Some of the letters were retrieved, but many have never been found................until now.

In response to an international call out by Joanne B Kaar. On the writing desk in the smoking room at Inverewe House Museum, you’ll find correspondence sent to Osgood and his daughter Mairi made in response to my artwork ‘Mail Bag’ inspired by the facts fiction and folkore of the postal system in the area and the beginnings of Inverewe Gardens over 150 years ago by Osgood H. Mackenzie.

Made by the 6 artists in the invited residency collaboration, local schools and members of The International Association of Hand Papermakers and Paper Artists, mail art continues to arrive for you to enjoy and is put on display in Inverewe House museum as it is delivered. You‘ll also find my residency notebook next to the correspondence for you to write comments in. I hope to accession this mail art correspondence into the Highland Archives in Inverness when the exhibition closes.
