What can the transformation of plants do? What can the sun do?
Common to the practice of the exhibiting artists is their preoccupation with making the invisible, visible, physical and tangible. They explore what a material can do by directing their creative energy into the origin of things in order to reach new realizations through the process itself.

Nature in the picture - pictures as memory of matter:
Complexity, meaningfulness and the reference to natural materials are the basis for Ina Kunz's forms of expression, in which the concentration on rhythmic surfaces becomes perceptible. Plant fibres produce a fascinating variety of surface textures and create their own dynamics, a special plasticity.
Ina Kunz works consistently with leaves of irises, maize, rhubarb peels, onions, asparagus, straw, coconut, hemp, cellulose, cotton and other organically grown materials.
The scooping and pouring with the medium pulp (liquid fibre pulp) does not allow any programmatic geometry, but requires discipline and at the same time offers playful
Design possibilities.
"I am always fascinated by how the forces of the plants work in the paper, how the organic materials react to each other in the picture. The greatest art here is to listen and to get involved in the peculiarities of the fibrous material that is created when natural materials are used".

Metamorphic BORDERLINES series Since 2012. The artist has been developing three-dimensional objects using her own technique of handmade paper, monochrome and colored paper objects for walls and floors, which are combined and related in a modular way.
The resulting areas of tension work beyond the object, suggesting border crossings, proximity or distance, danger, differences or harmony. The artist finds the infinite possibilities of transformation from surface to form from a single piece of paper particularly appealing.
The „drawing“ is done with a scalpel and scissors. The moulds are interlocked, not glued. Insights from the observation of natural models are used to implement stability, lightness, elasticity and plasticity in the objects.
The exhibition shows works of the One-Liner series, fleeting moments of human facial expressions captured with seemingly spontaneous lines, paintings, as well as works of paper and installations that have already been seen at international exhibitions.
A paper installation 3.50 meter high will be shown the first time.
Every Sunday the Artist is present, working on a 2x4 meter One Liner - Painting as a life show act.

Artist Statement
'Paper: I am working with and on paper in all stages, from floating fibers, to tearing up artworks for collages, or maculating them for recycling, just leaving traces from what was there originally. Signs from a drypoint may appear, or I choose to print on top of the pulppainting. Sometimes just a plain manufactured paper is my choice. As my theme very often is connected to nature, paper is not only the vehicle, but the message, and the process reflecting the cycles of growth and withering.
Art is my compass on the journey of life. Exploring my surroundings through art, I am constantly on the move. Sometimes forwards, very often in circles, crossing my own paths. I bring my experiences, and what I see in front of me will always be new and fresh.
I have a strong belief in the visual language, crossing borders, connecting over time, forwards and backwards. When our ancestor carved their drawings in stone, they were communicating with stronger powers then themselves. It is like art is the red line in human nature, and it gives me hope for the future.'

'Stones, nothing but stones dancing around your head, hundreds of them dangling from the ceiling, stones made of paper pulp, in all colors and sizes.
Ismet Tatar has always had a deeper bond to stones and this fact has made me think of the essence of it, the deeper meaning of stones…. Stone is a part of an entity, a morsel of our globe, fallen off from …a mountain, a rock, reduced to smaller sizes by wind, pressure, water. We walk along a coast, a mountain path, and pick up some because of their beauty, their smoothness, or we are visiting a foreign space of our globe, on holiday, and to remember the beauty of it, we take one home as a souvenir. I have quite a collection myself, a piece from Aetna volcano, a geo from the island of Lefkas, a piece of basalt from my last trip, Georgia and Armenia, picked up in the Caucasus mountains and so forth.
We look up into the sky and see our stars, always there since our childhood to guide us, they are rocks, stones that once left our globe perhaps, into the universe to throw back the light from the sun.
Stones, it has so many meaningful importance for us, we carry them, broken and polished, on our fingers, around the neck, we build our houses, fences with them, we break them, grind them to make paint from it, and one day we have one placed on our grave to be remembered, back to earth, where we come from.
When you walk through the dancing stones in the exhibition hall, think about it. I have not asked Ismet Tatar what her deeper reason was to create this sky of dancing stones, I will not ask her because I think, every visitor should have his/her own thoughts about it. Would you smilingly touch them and make them dance, or would you rather think about having a stone around your neck?'

Viviane Fontaine accompanies paper from artisanal production to artistic creation. In harmony with her environment, she is involved in harvesting, processing vegetable fibres and the entire papermaking process. Through this material, it is a philosophical link that she weaves between nature, art and life. The diversity of plants, their history and their therapeutic qualities are all aspects that guide her work.
Viviane Fontaine, a Geneva artist based in Cerniat en Gruyère, has also collaborated in the founding of the International Paper Triennial, which has been held at the Musée de Charmey since 1993. A time of paper is also an opportunity to discover more than 80 works specially designed by the artist for this exhibition. Altogether exhibited more than hundred artworks from the 3 past years.

Mary Heebner and Jeff Shelton
Wednesday - Sunday 12 pm - 5 pm
Thursday opened until 8 pm
Art, Design, & Architecture Museum
UC Santa Barbara
Santa Barbara, CA 93106-7130
In line with the AD&A Museum’s drive to investigate the outcomes of art and architecture’s crosspollination, this exhibition focuses on the interdisciplinary creative process that characterizes the work of artist Mary Heebner and architect Jeff Shelton. Both Heebner and Shelton’s practices revolve around cultures and traditions that developed in the Mediterranean basin centuries ago: While Heebner dissects images of Roman and Greek figures in hand made paper collages and handmade paper, watermarked books to “bring them back to life,” Shelton interprets popular Spanish building traditions in architectures and designs that expose his “less is more” sensitivity.
To illustrate the artist and the architect’s integrative working methodologies, the exhibition features Heebner’s studies along with a few works from the Museum’s architecture collection that the artist herself has chosen. Likewise, Shelton’s projects are presented with his own selections from the institution’s fine art holdings. In this context, for example, Heebner’s Veiled/Unveiled series, a set of large collages juxtaposing different facial angles of deities from the Antiquity, appear along the sensual house and garden that Oscar Niemeyer and Roberto Burle Marx designed for Burton Tremaine in Serena Beach, California. In a similar way, the colorful, methodical patterns that enliven the tiles and textiles that Shelton uses in many of his buildings’ interiors accompany a distinctive Claes Oldenburg’s print on graph paper.
As a result, a field of correspondences suggesting the reciprocity between art and architecture’s conception emerges. The Muse Project is an invitation to engage with the materials presented, imagining ulterior connections among them. With it, the exhibition highlights creativity’s relational nature, all the while it questions the scholastic and widely accepted division between the disciplines involved.

What does it mean to exist? How do you exist? Do you have a reason?
In the film At Eternity’s Gate/created by Julian Scnabel, the actor Willem Dafoe, playing Vincent van Gogh, says: Existence cannot be without a reason. Whether Vincent van Gogh actually expressed this sentence or not – it strikes a chord in me.
Existence has to do with being alive – with being.
Since the early seventies the French philosopher Henri Bergson’s theories on duration, a theory on consciousness and time, understood as free will, pure mobility, has been my guide line. Duration can only be grasped through intuition, getting back to the things themselves and experience without our habitual, utilitarian thinking. Inner duration cannot be divided. It is in possession of quality and not just quantifiable. Unlike every second of time, units of time, duration never meets two moments the same in its unfolding succession.
Our power of intuition is our most powerful source for obtaining true knowledge. Even though life is meant to be lived and maybe never quite known, the existential moments of duration experiencing intuition is what guides my work in an attempt to express the grasp of a moment, which will never be the same anymore in its unfolding succession. To me existence finds a reason in the creating act, where I experience duration.
The Danish artist Anne Vilsboell's exhibition at Galeri Beddington in the summer of 2019 shows selected painted moments that the artist wishes to communicate with the viewer.

Freedom of the arts is one of the fundamental rights in Germany, which is why the granting of cultural subsidies is linked to a complex institutional system that is intended to prevent a direct influence of state bodies on the cultural landscape. The New Right makes it clear that it wants to tackle the "densification of the cultural sector"1 and that it only wants to support art and culture that is committed to the people and the nation.

The print form still remains an important source of information. In my work, print is being liberated from its function. Now, the paper quality, the typography and the colorfulness are the decisive factors. Through the working and reworking of the materials, forms, surfaces, lines and structures come into being, and thus enable another way of looking at the substance of paper. All of the printed information remains, even when it is concealed in the curves, layers and bondings.
